Not my idea for a topic, but it showed up as one on SpeedingArrow, and since I answered it there I thought i'd transfer it to the crazies here. Based on a Top 5 rating, and in no particular order, Grendel'sChoices are as follows:

9/25/81, Lehigh...excuse Jerry the lyric flaw in verse 1 then hold on tight.

4/20/84, Philly Spectrum...rock and roll, letter perfect.

7/13/85, Giants Stadium, VERY rare stand-alone version, played in first set after a Saturday Night opener....blazing version.

5-23-82, Nice and tight.

1983, not sure exact date, UVM, Burlington, VT....splendid, long, jamming, great crowd energy behind it.

Others?

one per each year of the 80s

10-10-1980--my personal favorite scarlet fire combo
10-19-1981--fiery
05-23-1982--beautiful sbd, hot version
09-08-1983--Red Rocks, change of pace from 06-18
04-20-1984--nice
03-28-1985--effects laden
12-28-1986--Garcia shows that he's back (or at least well enough to rock)
07-08-1987--hot version, great show
03-31-1988--super tight, sweet intro, Garcia takes it up, '88 had alot of great Fires but this one is my favorite...perhaps the best played version of the year technically
07-07-1989--Garcia is just having fun on this one, rocking and scrubbing...great version...there's a vid of this on google somewhere...

here's a few I enjoy (although they may not be "best")

3/30/80
9/11/82
7/3/84 (if only because of the scarlet>touch>fire sequence)

4/20/84 is probably my favorite

I totally forgot about 9/11/82....That in fact is one of my Top 5 Scarlet>Fire combos EVER!

Off the top of my head:

6/18/83 Saratoga (also has monster Wheel>Playin>Dew>Throwin Stones>Not Fade out of Space)

10/14/83 Hartford (DP)

5/5/81 Glenns Falls

Lehigh is my alma mater, missed that show by just a bit. Always a sentimental favorite.

4/13/83 for the U of VT show. Sdb cuts most Dew and the Aud cuts three minutes out of a huge Eyes. I had to splice the two to get a complete version. Well worth it as that show is a true gem.

NOTE: Your mention of Lehigh made me give the show another listen (been along time). Wow, it is a really, really good show; I had forgotten. Fast paced, but really powerful. And what about the Sugar Mag/Sunshine Daydream being broken up with a Black Peter>Around + Around in the middle? Amazing stuff there.

I like the one from 10-31-80 that's on Dead set and the Dead Ahead video. Anyone know how many times they took it out of space like that? One of THE most perfect moments ever imo.

One of my faves has always been Merriweather 7/1/85.

By the way, the 4/84 shows in Philly were at the Civic Center not at the Spectrum. 4/21 was my first show. Too bad I missed the smokin' fire from the previous night.

7/13/85 was at Ventura. Same day as Live Aid!!!

This is just my preference but i always enjoyed what i used to call the four seasons
SCARLET>FIRE>ESTIMATED>EYES
to me this was the best fit of these songs in the 1980's and I always felt you needed a really tight Fire to get to an Estimated>Eyes
